The journey to pet ownership is different with each and every family, from deciding to have a puppy, to rehoming a dog through adoption. We don’t always know our pet’s history, however when we do, it can spark an even bigger bond between us, the owner, and them.

As one example, we spoke to our customer, Elaine who has eight-year-old Bella, a Golden Retriever. Bella was being trained as an assistance dog, but this didn’t work out, therefore Elaine was delighted to welcome her into her family.

Choosing Pet Insurance

Elaine decided that she wanted to give Bella the best of everything as soon as she got her and that included ensuring they had pet insurance. When making a purchase of this nature, she prefers to look at review websites to decide which company she wants to use.

Elaine said: ‘There’s no NHS for our pets and with dogs and cats being so unpredictable in their behaviour, I couldn’t imagine not having pet insurance.’

Elaine’s Pet Insurance Experience

Earlier this year (Jan 2024) after Bella had been on one of her daily walks, Elaine thought she’d hurt herself between her claws. She took Bella to the vets, and they recommended wrapping the paw as a preventative treatment to stop Bella from licking it and gave antibiotics.

Having then been on holiday, when Elaine came back, Bella had developed two sores either side of her wrist and they couldn’t understand where they had come from. She took Bella back to the vets who swabbed the sores. The test results indicated that Bella had developed skin infections caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (MRSP) the canine version of MRSA, which meant Bella was then resistant to common types of antibiotics.

This was a very stressful situation for Elaine, the type of infection meant she was unable to take Bella into the veterinary practice to avoid other pets being exposed to the MRSP virus when she came for check-ups. Therefore, she had to wait in her car and have the vet come to the car park to examine Bella. Eventually the vets said Elaine could send photo updates and they would consult Bella that way.

Elaine called The Insurance Emporium to discuss whether her policy would cover a potential claim, she noted: ‘Every time I call, someone answers the phone and can easily answer my questions, it was very reassuring. I was grateful that there was no pressure to get anything sorted quickly.’

The whole ordeal went on for six months, however Bella is now back to her usual self, and most importantly she’s back to chasing squirrels.

We cannot predict what’s going to happen to our pets, it’s an unfortunate reality that accidents and illnesses could happen to each and every pet.
